Full Text Review(s)
"This 11-volume set presents current statistics (2003), information, and beautiful color photographs and maps about the countries of what most of us consider to be the Middle East (divided into Middle East, Western Asia, and Northern Africa for this set). Written for an audience of high school age and above, the attractive volumes are in an easy-to-peruse format that sets the coverage by country. This part of the world comes with multifaceted complexities when explaining its people, so justice is given by this set having the regions broken down into specific countries. Information about daily life and cultural expression are given in addition to the usual topics of government and economy. Quick facts are also easily found and each book has a "further research" section with a bibliography of both print and electronic resources. There is enough information to whet the curious appetite to go deeper or help the general scholar appreciate other cultures. From the rise and fall of civilizations to tables that compare U.S. statistics to those of these countries to give an understandable comparison, the effort made in organizing the set is evident. This effort combined with a comprehensive index provides understanding of a part of the world that, although part of our everyday news, is still a mystery to most. This series will eventually include every region of the world, so it will offer a complete resource critical to giving justice to all of the people who live in it."

"This outstanding resource offers a comprehensive look at the geography, culture, economics, and history of the countries found in the Middle East, Western Asia, and Northern Africa regions. The first 10 volumes are arranged geographically, and include one to six countries per volume. Iran and Egypt each rate their own volume. An in-depth article follows an introduction to the region covered on each specific country. Facts, statistics, maps, and a chronology introduce each country article. The well-written, easy-to-read articles continue with extensive coverage of the government, modern history, cultural expression, daily life, economy, and major cities for each country. Almost every page is enhanced by a colorful photograph, map, or diagram. Each volume ends with a list of sources for further research, but many of the books listed are out-of-date. Volume 11 is a compilation of informative comparative tables related to a variety of topics. This final volume also offers a glossary, thematic indexes, and the comprehensive set index. Social Studies classes and other students working on country projects will find invaluable information here. This high quality set is an excellent resource for examining not only the geography, but also the culture of these important, yet sometimes misunderstood, countries. Recommended."
